Identical twins are a natural occurrence. By definition, they share the same DNA make up, and thus offer the same genetics. Unfortunately, few of the most elite animals are born with an identical twin. Cloning technology now allows breeders to create a calf or calves that are genetically identical to the original animal.
A simple tissue sample, usually taken from a small ear punch, is all that is required for Bovance to start the genetic preservation and cloning process. In the laboratory, these tissue samples are cultured to produce millions of viable cells, creating a cell line that then can be cryogenically frozen and stored indefinitely. When desirable or optimal to do so, through an advanced biotechnology process, DNA from the stored cell line can be transferred into oocytes (eggs) which have had their genetic material removed. These oocytes are grown in an incubator for several days, and are then transferred into recipient females. After a normal gestation period, the cloned calves are born just as any other calf would be.
